The United States will leave the World Health Organization (WHO) in July 2021. The US plans to withdraw its representatives from the headquarters and other offices of the organization.
This was announced by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Twitter.
“Today, the Donald Trump administration continues to push forward with the US withdrawal from the World Health Organization. WHO has failed to implement urgently needed reforms, starting with a demonstration of its independence from the Chinese Communist Party,” he wrote.
However, he noted that the United States will identify alternative implementing partners and provide them with targeted funding to protect the health and safety of Americans and save lives around the world.
Recall that at the end of May, Donald Trump announced the severance of relations with the WHO, and he promised to redirect the funds that were used to finance it to other international organizations.
After that, a number of medical organizations turned to Trump with a request to reconsider his decision to break off relations with WHO, since such a step could significantly complicate the fight against coronavirus.
We add that the break-in relations with WHO was preceded by Washington's refusal to finance the organization.
In early July, Donald Trump notified Congress of the US withdrawal from WHO.
