UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed concern over the US decision to impose sanctions on two staff members of the International Criminal Court (ICC).
This was stated on Wednesday by the official representative of the Secretary-General Stephane Dujarrick.
“The Secretary-General noted with concern today's statement by the US Secretary of State, which announced that the ICC attorney and the head of the Department of Justice, Complementarity and Cooperation will be subject to restrictions, in particular the property freeze,” he said.
Dujarrick also stressed the importance of the United States fulfilling its obligations as the host country of the UN headquarters, that is, ensuring access to it for all ICC staff.
In mid-June, US President Donald Trump signed a decree allowing the imposition of economic sanctions against court officials who decided to investigate possible crimes committed in Afghanistan, including by US military personnel. At the ICC, Washington's actions were then called “an unprecedented attack.”
