Merkel to discuss Western moves with EU and NATO allies
Russian opposition leader Alexey Navalny, who is still in a coma, was poisoned with the Novichok nerve agent.
According to Deutsche Welle, this is the official position of the German federal government.
In particular, on September 2, government spokesman Steffen Seibert said that tests carried out by a special laboratory at the Charite clinic, where they are now fighting for Navalny's life, had no doubt identified this poison.
Against this backdrop, the German government “in the strongest possible way” condemned the poisoning and “urged the Russian government to comment on this issue”.
Berlin plans to discuss with its partners in the European Union and NATO “an appropriate joint response” to the incident.
In addition, Prime Minister Angela Merkel has already held consultations with several members of her government, as well as with the head of the Chancellery Helge Braun, agreeing on further steps.
Recall that Alexei Navalny became ill on August 20 during a flight from Tomsk to Moscow. In this regard, the plane made an emergency landing in Omsk and Russian doctors diagnosed him with metabolic disorders. On August 22, he was evacuated to the Charite hospital in Berlin.
