In Berlin, U.S. sanctions against German companies involved in the Russian project are considered illegal.
The Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline to transport Russian gas to Germany along the Baltic Sea bottom must be completed, despite the U.S. sanctions. This was stated by German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Tuesday, September 1, during a trip to Stralsund.
“We consider these extraterritorial sanctions, which extend beyond the U.S. territory, to be illegitimate,” she said.
At the beginning of August, three U.S. senators sent a threatening letter of penalties to the German port of Sassnitz-Mukran, near the Nord Stream gas pipeline receiving station.
Earlier Merkel said that Nord Stream 2 is an economic project to be completed. The German Chancellor stressed the inadvisability of linking this project to the case of possible poisoning of Russian opposition activist Alexey Navalny.
