The United States Concerned About European Energy Security

The United States warned Germany, its key European ally, of growing threats from Russia on the eve of the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo travels to Germany to emphasize the need to continue to strengthen the transatlantic partnership. Meetings between the head of the American diplomatic department and the leadership of Germany will take place a few days after Denmark removed one of the last legal obstacles to the implementation of the Nord Stream-2 project — a pipeline along the bottom of the Baltic Sea, through which Russian gas will be delivered to Germany.

A senior official at the State Department said the US is concerned about the “energy security” of its European partners. Nord Stream 2, he said, is primarily a “political tool” of Russia, and not a full commercial project.

“We regularly express our concerns. We regard this as a tool with which Russia is trying to use energy to advance its geopolitical agenda,” the source said.

The source added that Nord Stream 2 jeopardizes energy security priorities, “making European countries and our allies more dependent on one energy source.”

Germany is Europe's largest consumer of natural gas. At the same time, very little domestic energy is produced in the country. For this reason, Germany is heavily dependent on imports in the energy sector. The authorities are also trying to reduce US concerns about security and geopolitics.

Mike Pompeo, who served in Germany at a US military base in his youth, will visit Grafenwur, Wilseck, Modlaroyt, Leipzig, and Berlin, where he will take part in events marking the end of the Cold War. In Leipzig, the Secretary of State will meet with Heiko Maas, German Foreign Minister. Pompeo and Maas will discuss the transatlantic partnership in the face of growing threats from Russia, China, and Iran, the Department of State said.

In Berlin, Pompeo will meet with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and other government representatives to discuss partnership and cooperation between the United States and Germany.

Pompeo will give a speech at the Berlin Brandenburg Gate. As the representatives of the State Department specified, the topic of his speech is the role and significance of freedom.

Recall that Denmark issued the last missing permit for the construction of Nord Stream 2, southeast of the island of Bornholm. At the same time, the Danish Energy Agency has chosen the shortest route, since it provides the least risk and environmental impact. The application process in Danish jurisdiction lasted more than two years.

Nord Stream 2 AG notes that more than 2100 kilometers of the gas pipeline bypassing Ukraine has already been laid. Earlier, the head of the Russian Gazprom Alexei Miller predicted that it would take about five weeks to obtain the construction of a section of the pipeline through Danish waters after obtaining permission from the country's authorities.

The US and Ukraine are opposed to the construction of the pipeline, as it expands the Kremlin’s influence in Europe. At the same time, the United States is preparing new sanctions against Nord Stream 2. The relevant energy security bill in Europe was prepared by Republican Congressman Andy Barr.

Also, President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky noted that Russia will be able to “twist its hands” to Ukraine in case of commissioning of the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline.
