Texas airport canceled over 60% of flights due to Hurricane Laura

More than 60% of all flights at Texas' largest airport were canceled on Wednesday due to the approach of Hurricane Laura. This is evidenced by the information posted on the FlightAware website, which tracks the movements of aircraft.

According to a specialized website, Houston Airport canceled 212 flights (61%), delaying 11 flights (3%). At the same time, the international airport canceled the reception of 201 flights (62%), postponing the landing of 17 flights (5%).

The Associated Press reports on the closure of gas stations on the Gulf Coast in Texas and Louisiana. Residents of coastal areas have filled the bus terminals, rushing to leave the area, which will be hit by Laura in the next few hours. The shopkeeper in a hurry clogs the shop windows with chipboard boards.

As the US National Hurricane Observation Center said on Wednesday, wind speed within the atmospheric phenomenon increased from 61 m / s to 64.8 m / s, which corresponds to the fourth category on the Saffir-Simpson scale. The hurricane is located 250 km south of Lake Charles in Louisiana and is moving northwestward at a speed of 6.7 m / s.

A storm warning was announced for residents of the Mississippi estuary and coastal areas of two states. The authorities of Texas and Louisiana ordered 585 thousand local residents to evacuate in connection with the approach of “Laura”.

The hurricane season typically lasts six months in the Atlantic, from early June to late November. An atmospheric phenomenon is classified as a tropical storm and gets its own name if the wind speed within it reaches about 17.5 m / s. When the wind speed is 33 m / s or more, the storm becomes a hurricane.
