In the United States, a former special forces officer was arrested and accused of collaborating with Russian intelligence.
Judge Zachary Terwilliger said in a statement that “from 1996 to 2011, Peter Debbins worked together with Russian intelligence officers, periodically visited Russia, was given a code name, and even signed a statement that he would like to serve Russia.”
"Debbins broke the oath of an American soldier, betrayed the special forces and endangered the national security of our country by disclosing confidential information to Russian intelligence officers, providing details about his unit, giving out the identities of his colleagues to Russian intelligence and trying to recruit them,” the minister of Themis said.
“Our country trusted the accused, he accepted this trust and directed it against the United States,” the judge concluded.
“The task of our military is to protect our people from adversaries. Servicemen, while on duty, make incredible sacrifices. When they collide and pass on classified information to our opponents abroad, they betray an oath to the country and colleagues. As this verdict shows, we quickly and persistently hold such people accountable, “the statement says.
Debbins faces life in prison.
