Turkey found gas in the Black Sea

Turkey continues to get rid of its gas dependence on Russia. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced that the republic has discovered large reserves of natural gas in the Black Sea and will begin using it by 2023. He stated this on Friday, August 21, on the air of the Turkish TV channel NTV.

“This is an event of historic proportions. We have discovered the largest natural gas field in the history of the country in the Black Sea. The volume is 320 billion cubic meters. By 2023, we plan to supply it to our citizens,” he said.

As a reminder, in 2019, Turkey reduced purchases of Russian gas to 15.5 billion cubic meters. m, which is two times less than the maximum value recorded in 2017 – 29 billion cubic meters. m.

Let us also remind that Azerbaijani natural gas from the Shah Deniz field in the Caspian Sea, which is supplied to Europe and Turkey via the TANAP pipeline, hits the Russian Turkish Stream gas pipeline.

Now the throughput of TANAP is 16 billion cubic meters per year. Of these volumes, 6 billion cubic meters. m remain in Turkey, and 10 billion cubic meters. m — transported to the south of Europe. Shah Deniz reserves are estimated at 1.2 trillion cubic meters.
