German Chancellor Angela Merkel does not see for herself the role of mediator in Belarus after the presidential elections in the republic almost two weeks ago, since the President of the Republic of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko refused to hold a telephone conversation with her. Such words of the German Chancellor are quoted by Reuters.
Speaking after the meeting of the leaders of the EU countries, Merkel said that the EU will support the Belarusian civil society, but it is important that the opposition itself decide what it wants.
She said she warned Russian President Vladimir Putin that Russian military intervention would “complicate matters.”
“I do not see for myself the role of a mediator at the moment, since Lukashenko refused to talk to me, which I regret,” she said. “From our side, we will do our best to push for a national dialogue.”
Earlier, Lukashenko asked Putin to convey to Merkel a request not to interfere in the affairs of Belarus.
Let us remind you that earlier Lukashenka stated that Russia, upon the first request, will provide assistance in ensuring the security of his country in the event of an external threat. The head of Belarus clarified that “we are talking about the military component” under the agreement with the Russian Federation within the framework of the Union State and the CSTO.
Besides, let us remind you that Lukashenko and Putin agreed on a joint response to the aggravation of the situation in Belarus.
