Mali President resigns after being arrested by rebels

Mali President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita has announced his resignation after being arrested by rebel military. This was reported by Mali State Television.

“I decided to leave my powers, starting from this moment ... I do not want the blood to be shed in order to preserve my power,” the agency quoted President Boubacar Keith as saying. His speech was broadcast on the Mali state television.

According to Reuters, due to the rebellion in the country, 14 West African countries that are part of ECOWAS are closing their borders with the Republic, as well as ending economic transactions with it.

The night before, the leaders of the rebel military in Mali announced that they had arrested the country's President and Prime Minister Bouba Cisse. Information about the detention of Keita and Cisse came to the Russian Foreign Ministry.

In Mali, the political crisis has continued for several months. Opposition forces are demanding that President Ibrahim Boubacar Keith step down and resign.
