The suspect met with a Russian intelligence officer and passed on classified information to him, the Norwegian security service said.
The Norwegian security police have detained a 50-year-old man suspected of transmitting data of state importance to the Russian Federation. This, on Monday, August 17, the intelligence service itself reports on Twitter.
It is known that the suspect in espionage for Russia is an employee of a consulting company, is a citizen of Norway, but was born outside the country, lives in the capital city of Oslo.
“The accusation is based on the fact that meetings were held between the accused and the Russian intelligence officers,” a spokesman for the special service told Aftenposten.
It is clarified that the man was detained on August 15 in one of the restaurants in Oslo. At the same time, the detainee was placed under preliminary arrest for four weeks.
The defense side said that the man acknowledges the fact of transferring information, but insists that the messages did not contain any confidential information.
However, the prosecution focuses on the fact that the meetings with the representative of the Russian Federation were held in secret, and this indicates that the citizen understood who and why the information was intended.
“In exchange, the suspect received large sums,” the prosecution said.
Local media outlets note that the case is related to industrial espionage.
The man is charged with a crime under article 124 of the Norwegian Penal Code “disclosing state secrets”. He faces up to 15 years in prison.
