United States President Donald Trump continues to recommend untested drugs for the treatment of COVID-19. So, the American leader has repeatedly called for the use of hydroxychloroquine (an anti-malarial drug), now he recommends the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to approve the use of oleander extract in the fight against coronavirus. This is reported by the Axios portal.
As noted, during the meeting at which oleandrin was presented to Trump as a potential coronavirus drug, he “essentially said” that “the FDA should be approved.”
Meanwhile, there is no confirmed data on the effectiveness of oleandrin in the treatment of patients with coronavirus. FDA chief Stephen Hahn has not yet agreed to approve the drug.
In addition, senior officials familiar with internal talk about oleander have expressed concern over how this botanical extract is progressing at the highest levels of the Trump administration, the portal notes.
Earlier, British scientists said that the antimalarial drug hydroxychloroquine, which became famous and popular after US President Donald Trump began taking it, does not help patients, and sometimes worsens the health of patients with coronavirus.
