A separate application can be opened on each screen. The phone runs on Android and costs $1,400.
The dual-screen smartphone was first announced in October 2019. Microsoft is offering a completely new form factor for the phone — two screens separated by a 360-degree hinge. This is one of the more unusual devices coming out in the coming months.
The release of a revolutionary device is Microsoft's new attempt to gain a foothold in the smartphone market. Previous models failed due to the fact that they ran on Windows Mobile and did not have access to a huge ecosystem of applications comparable to Android or iOS.
Microsoft has learned from past mistakes and is now using Android. The smartphone will not only have access to Google Play but will also offer users the advantage of working on two screens.
All Office 365 apps will automatically expand to provide more content when they open on two displays. In Outlook, the user will see the inbox on the left screen and the open message on the right. Microsoft is partnering with other companies to help build apps that use both screens on the Surface Duo.
The characteristics of the device give rise to mixed feelings.
The Surface Duo is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor and supports 4G LTE but not 5G. There is a fingerprint reader for unlocking the phone, but no NFC or wireless charging.
Another weak point is the price — for $1,399 you can buy a very good laptop.
A version with 256 GB of memory instead of 128 GB will cost $1,499.
