“Wine Windows” reopened in Italy for drinkers

Entrepreneurs thus sell not only alcohol but also ice cream, cocktails, and coffee

Italy has revived the long-standing practice of selling wine through special “Wine Windows” (Buchette del vino as they are called in Italian). In the 17th century, winemakers used them to sell their products during the plague. Now local entrepreneurs are trying to fight the COVID-19 pandemic in this way. This is reported by the entertainment portal Bored Panda.

The history of this phenomenon was described by the Florentine scientist and academician Francesco Rondinelli. During the outbreak of the bubonic plague, wine producers understood the danger of infection, so they sold the drink through small windows. They did not accept payment directly. Customers put coins on a special tray, after which the seller disinfected them with vinegar and only then took them away.

Now the wine window method has become relevant again, as it helps maintain social distance and minimizes contact. Wine windows sell not only wine, but ice cream, cocktails, and coffee.

According to Buchette del Vino, a non-profit cultural organization, there are about 150 such windows in Tuscany and over 100 in Florence.
