Gates believes that climate change can take many times more lives than COVID-19

Climate change on the planet may lead to the death of many more people in the coming decades than the new coronavirus pandemic. This opinion was expressed in his blog by the founder of Microsoft Corporation Bill Gates.

“The global crisis has shaken the world,” he said. The entrepreneur noted that more than 600 thousand people died due to the virus, and tens of millions lost their jobs. According to him, there were “economic difficulties, which have not happened for many generations.” As gates pointed out, “in just a few decades, the same can be said about another global crisis — climate change.” “No matter how terrible this pandemic is, climate change can be worse,” the businessman said.

According to his estimates, in the world per 100 thousand people of the population “on an annual basis”, on average, there were about 14 deaths due to coronavirus. “How does this relate to climate change? Over the next 40 years, rising temperatures are projected to lead to the same increase in mortality — 14 deaths per 100,000 people. By the end of the century, if emissions continue to grow at a high rate, climate change will lead to an additional 73 deaths per 100,000 people, “ Gates said. “In other words, by 2060, climate change will be as deadly as COVID-19, and by 2100 it could be five times more deadly,” he explained.

Gates stated that in the light of the pandemic, the volume of harmful emissions has decreased slightly. As he stressed, this would help to mitigate the effect of climate change if the same reduction occurred every year. The businessman noted that this is unlikely to be feasible now.

The founder of Microsoft Corporation pointed out that global warming will cause serious economic damage around the world. In the next 10 to 20 years, it will most likely be comparable to what would happen if a pandemic of the same scale as the current one occurred once a decade. By the end of this century, the damage to the world economy “will be much more serious if the current trends regarding emissions continue in the world,” the entrepreneur believes.

Gates in this regard recommends taking immediate steps to prevent global warming.
