Merkel does not plan to personally come to New York to attend the UNGA

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Foreign Minister Heiko Maas do not plan to personally come to New York to participate in the high-level week of the UN General Assembly at the end of September. This was stated on Thursday at a briefing by the permanent representative of Germany to the UN Christoph Heusgen.

“I can confirm that in Germany, neither the Chancellor nor the foreign Minister has any plans to come to New York to personally attend the General Assembly,” he said. Heusgen noted that in this way the country plans to comply with the UN recommendations related to the coronavirus pandemic.

On Tuesday, us permanent representative to the UN Kelly Craft said that US President Donald Trump may become the only leader who will address the UN General Assembly in September in person.

Earlier, the Chairman of the 74th session of the UN General Assembly, Tidjane Mohammad Bande, said that the member states have made a consolidated decision that instead of personal speeches by the leaders of the countries in September, their video messages will be shown in the hall of the General Assembly. At the same time, representatives of countries are not officially prohibited from coming to New York for a high-level week, but there are strict quarantine restrictions in the UN headquarters building.
