The state Department is requesting almost one and a half-billion dollars for 2021 to counter China.
US Secretary of state Michael Pompeo said the Communist Party of China (CPC) is “the central threat of the modern era.” He made the corresponding statement on Thursday, July 30, at a hearing in the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the US Senate.
“We objectively look at the Chinese Communist Party as the Central threat of the modern era,” he said, noting that American diplomacy “helped the international community understand the threat of the CPC.”
“No administration, neither Republicans nor Democrats, has been as aggressive in countering China's hostile actions as the administration of President Trump,” the Secretary of state said.
He noted that Washington imposed sanctions “against the Chinese leadership” as well as companies from China, terminated the special status for Hong Kong, and “closed the Consulate in Houston because it was a den of spies.”
Now, as part of its response to China, the state Department, in particular, is requesting $1.49 billion for 2021 to help countries in the Indo-Pacific region, “which is an increase of 20% compared to the budget request for 2020.”
Recall that last week the US closed the Chinese Consulate General in Houston, and China closed the US Consulate General in Chengdu.
