One climber died and three others were injured while climbing to the Dom de Neige de l'Arche in the French Alps. This was reported by the Prefecture of the Department of the Upper Alps.
According to the authorities, the incident took place in the morning when a group of French climbers on the slopes of the Dome de Neige de l'Arche were hit by a block of ice that had separated from the glacier. The 32-year-old climber died on the spot and three others were injured. The doctors assess the condition of one injured person as critical.
“In recent days, ice blocks have fallen from high altitudes in the northern part of the peak. Due to the current climatic conditions, such cases may also occur in this area in the next few days,” warned the Upper Alps Prefecture. “The mountain rescue services and authorities of the department strongly recommend climbers to avoid this extremely dangerous area,” the prefecture stressed.
Dom de Neige de l'Arche is 4015 m above sea level. Climbing this mountain is very popular among climbers, including beginners. The classic route to the top runs along the northeast wall, through the glacier Blanc, through the mountain refuge of Des Ecrins. The ascent usually takes about two days.
