The US authorities intend to collect more information about alleged contacts between representatives of the UN and the Venezuelan authorities regarding the possible violation of sanctions by Caracas against the DPRK. This was stated on Tuesday at a briefing by the US special representative for Venezuela Elliott Abrams.
He was asked to comment on media claims that representatives of the world organization had previously warned the administration of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro that possible agreements between Caracas and Pyongyang in the military-technical sphere could violate sanctions against North Korea.
Abrams replied that he only learned from the media “about this correspondence between the UN and the Maduro regime.” “We will look into this correspondence, the lack of response from the Maduro regime, and what the consequences may be,” he added.
As stated by Abrams, earlier representatives of a number of States told the United States that they do not intend to impose any sanctions against Venezuela, “except through the UN” or other international organizations.
“Therefore, violation of UN sanctions can be very serious for the Maduro regime. In this case, many countries will be ready to impose sanctions if they have not already done so, the US special representative believes. “We will pay great attention to this.”
