The first namaz in 86 years was held in Hagia Sophia

The first Friday prayer in 86 years was performed in Istanbul's Hagia Sophia, Anadolu reports.

It is reported that thousands of Muslim believers gathered in the building and in the surrounding area for prayer.

As part of a program organized by the Turkish Religious Affairs Office, four imams offered prayers from the four minarets of the mosque.

Sura "Fatiha" and the first six verses of Surah "Bakara" from the Holy Quran was voiced personally by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the agency reports.

Earlier, the Turkish State Council canceled the 1935 government decree on assigning the building of the former Orthodox cathedral, and over the past centuries — the mosque, the status of a museum.

A few hours later, Erdogan signed a decree on the beginning of Muslim services there.

The president's opponents believe that in this way he is trying to raise his shaky rating.
