There have been no changes regarding Turkey’s return to the F-35 production program.
The production of components for the fifth-generation F-35 fighter-bomber in Turkey is scheduled to be phased out by the end of March 2020, while we are not talking about returning Ankara to the F-35 program. This was announced on Friday at a briefing for journalists by the US Deputy Secretary of Defense for Procurement and Logistics Ellen Lord.
“As for Turkey and the F-35, there have been no changes regarding the return of Turkey to the F-35 production program,” she said.
“Turkey still produces 900 components for the F-35 and will continue to do so until the production line for which Turkey is responsible is transferred to another country at the end of March 2020,” the Lord added.
The deputy minister was also asked who exactly and in what time frame the production of components will be transferred.
“This will be decided by Lockheed Martin, as well as Pratt & Whitney,” she said.
Recall, on July 17, a White House spokeswoman in a written statement said that Turkey’s decision to acquire Russian S-400 anti-aircraft missile systems made it impossible for her to continue participating in the program for the creation of fifth-generation American fighter-bombers F-35. Ankara planned to purchase 100 aircraft and produced part of the equipment, avionics and fuselage elements for this machine. It was also reported that U.S. President Donald Trump has banned selling Turkey F-35s over already signed contracts.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in turn, said that Turkey would turn to other countries for the purchase of fighters if the US did not sell her F-35 aircraft. Erdogan noted that Turkey may also reconsider the acquisition of an improved aircraft of the American company Boeing.
