US Senate foreign relations committee members Bob Menendez and Cory Booker issued a statement condemning Azerbaijan's attack on Armenia.
The senators expressed deep concern about the use of force on the border of Armenia and Azerbaijan, stressing that Azerbaijan, with the assistance of Turkey, chose the path of violence instead of the peace negotiation process under the auspices of the OSCE Minsk group. It is for this reason that the senators called for a cessation of hostilities and the immediate resumption of peace negotiations.
“The recent actions of Baku have only increased violence, hindered efforts aimed at achieving a peaceful and long-term solution to the Nagorno — Karabakh conflict and forced us to raise serious questions about the amount of military assistance we are currently providing to the government of Azerbaijan,” the senators stressed.
They stressed that providing military assistance to a regime that is disrupting negotiations under the US co-chairmanship is absurd.
“We call on the Trump administration to immediately end this support and show full respect for amendment 907 of the Freedom Act,” the senators said in a joint statement.
