Britain, Canada, and the US accused Russia of theft: Putin's reaction

Russia has launched a cyberattack to steal research data on the development of a vaccine for coronavirus infection, which is being created in the UK.

This statement was made on July 16 by the security services of three countries-Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

In particular, as stated in the National center for cybersecurity in Britain, behind the hacker attack is the Russian group APT29, known as Dukes and Cozy Bear. They were accused by the US of a cyber attack on the servers of the US Democratic party before the 2016 election.

British experts believe that this organization is “ almost certainly part of the Russian special services.” Its members have repeatedly attacked British, Canadian, and American organizations involved in the development of COVID-19 vaccines since the beginning of the year.

To steal information, cybercriminals used various tools and methods, including custom malware WellMess and WellMail.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the United Kingdom has already promised to bring the organizers of hacker attacks to justice.

“It is absolutely unacceptable for Russian intelligence services to attack those who are fighting the coronavirus pandemic. While some are recklessly pursuing their own selfish interests, Britain and its allies are doing the difficult job of finding a vaccine and protecting the health of the world,” foreign minister Dominic Raab said.

The communications security Center of Canada and the national security Agency of the United States made similar accusations against this group.

The Kremlin denies any involvement.

“Russia does not know who could hack pharmaceutical companies and has nothing to do with it,” said Dmitry Peskov, a spokesman for the Russian President, calling such accusations “unfounded”.

Earlier in the day, Raab said that Russia was involved in another hacker attack — the “leak” of secret trade documents of the United States and Britain. In this regard, London has launched a criminal case.
