The US imposed duties of 25% on goods from France

The US is imposing additional duties of 25% on French goods worth $1.3 billion. This was reported by Reuters with reference to a message from the office of the US trade representative.

The new rules, as indicated in the material, will only come into force on January 6, 2021. The additional duties are the responsibility of the States to the introduction of a “digital tax” by France. This tax, according to the American side, infringes on US companies that are engaged in digital technologies.

In addition, the office's message clarifies that French cosmetics and bags will also be subject to additional duties. However, it is emphasized that the delayed implementation of the measures in question will give time to solve the problem. At the same time, Washington reserves the right to start applying duties earlier than 180 days if it deems it necessary.

In July 2019, the French Parliament passed a law on taxing the services of major digital companies such as Amazon, Apple, Facebook, and Google. This law has drawn strong criticism from the United States. Us leader Donald trump then said that in response, he could impose a tax on French wine.

In January of this year, the French Economy and Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire said that France and the United States have established a “common framework” for the “digital tax”, and in accordance with them, France will postpone the collection of the “digital tax” until December 2020, and the States in response will refuse to impose sanctions duties.
