“Rain of the Decade” in Japan flooded the streets and destroyed houses

Within just one hour, more than 100 mm of rain fell in parts of Kumamoto Prefecture. Emergency services received more than 100 calls for rescue.

Torrential rains struck the southern region of Japan on Saturday morning, July 4, and floods occurred in Kumamoto and Kagoshima Prefectures, NHK reports.

It is noted that over one hour more than 100 mm of rain fell in a part of Kumamoto Prefecture. Meteorologists note that this is the most powerful rainfall in the last decade. Kuma River in the south of Kumamoto overflowed, the bridge is blurred.

Emergency services say they received more than 100 calls for rescue. It is also noted that the flow of water demolished several houses, and communication with many people was lost.

Earlier, Japanese authorities ordered the evacuation of nearly 800 thousand people from three cities — Kagoshima, Kirishima, and Ira. Most of the floods will affect settlements located in low-lying areas.

In China, 12 people died due to showers.
