Washington will treat the Autonomous region on the same principle as Beijing − “one country, one system”.
The United States stopped the export of American military goods and certain dual-use technologies in Hong Kong. Secretary of state Michael Pompeo announced this on Twitter on June 29.
“Today, the United States stops exporting to Hong Kong American-made military products controlled by the Department of state for military and political Affairs, as well as dual-use technologies related to (ensuring) national security controlled by the US Department of Commerce,” the head of the State Department said.
He also added that “ if Beijing now treats Hong Kong on the principle of “one country, one system”, then Washington should treat it the same way.
The State Department's press service said in a statement that the US is forced to take this action to ensure the country's national security.
“We can no longer distinguish between exports of regulated products to Hong Kong and exports of regulated products to mainland China,” the Department said.
Recall that on May 28, the highest legislative body of China adopted a resolution on the development of a law on national security in Hong Kong, which will allow Beijing to create its own special services in the region and prohibit the holding of protests.
The text of the document should be approved soon.
The white house perceived China's initiative as a violation of Hong Kong's Autonomous status and promised to respond with sanctions. At the end of May, the American side began the process of canceling all the benefits that the special administrative region enjoyed.
