Poland’s president’s wife is at the center of media scandal

The wife of the President of Poland, Agatha Kornhauser-Duda, unwittingly, was at the center of the election scandal. On the air of public television in Poland, her clothing style was praised by an American fashion designer, who later turned out to be a Pole and a friend of a television journalist.

The Poles called President Andrzej Duda’s wife the “silent first lady,” because, as a rule, at official events, she remains in the shadow of her husband and does not take any active part in the country's public life. Now, when several days are left before the presidential election, and the rating of the current head of state is not high enough to win in the first round, the Duda election headquarters decided to fix the image of his wife. Polish public television TVP, which traditionally serves the interests of the ruling party Law and Justice, showed a story about five years of Mrs. Agatha in the presidential palace. Journalists reported that, according to the presidential office, she held 1,426 events and public events, and that the first lady is engaged in charity work and does good deeds, but she doesn’t do it for show. Then it was about how the wife of the President of Poland represents her country in the international arena. The story appeared a certain American fashion designer Christian Paul, who compared Agatha Duda with Melania Trump, and expressed confidence that “both of them in the international arena stand out against the general background of character and style.”

After the plot went on air, the Poles became interested in praising their first lady for a fashion designer with a dissimilar American accent. But searches on the Internet did not bring any results. Then the audience tried to ask their questions to the author of the story, King Kitchen, but instead of answering, she blocked her profiles on social networks. After that, opposition journalists took up the matter. Very soon they found out that Christian Paul's real name is Christian Farbanets, and he works as a financial analyst. However, his accounts in social networks almost immediately afterward were deleted. But then accounts of the American fashion designer Christian Paul appeared immediately. It would be ridiculous if it were not about the oldest Polish television channel and the wife of the President of Poland. According to observers, the first lady, indeed, dresses elegantly and tastefully, and it is surprising that TVP journalists could not find a real famous designer who would agree to comment on the appearance of Agatha Kornhauser-Duda.

In early June, the Polish public opinion research center IBRIS conducted a survey among Poles about which of the wives of the Polish presidents they like the most. The first place was taken by Iolanta Kwasniewski — the wife of the head of state in 1995-2005, Alexander Kwasniewski. She was named 48.1 percent of respondents. Second place went to the current first lady Agatha Kornhauser-Duda with 20.6 percent of the vote. Maria Kaczynski, who died in a plane crash with her husband Lech Kaczynski in 2010, was in third place with 16.6 percent. Fourth place was awarded to Anna Komorowska, wife of Bronislaw Komorowski, former president from 2010 to 2015. 1.6 percent of the Poles named her their favorite. And finally, Danuta Walesa — the mother of eight children and the wife of the first president in democratic Poland, Lech Walesa, got the last place and 0.6 percent of the compatriots' high marks. 12.6 percent of Poles could not decide which of the presidents' wives they like best.
